Written for Mexico. This analysis applies to Mexican federal tax law — ISR (income tax), IVA (VAT) and SAT rules — and cites Mexican statutes. Amounts are in Mexican pesos (MXN).
The reverse scene also exists: you paid the rent, the advance to the supplier, or the finiquito (final pay) to the worker, and on the other side someone — by mistake, disorganization or bad faith — claims that "nothing arrived." Your word against theirs, except for one detail: if you paid by SPEI, the Bank of Mexico certified your payment and the certificate is three clicks away. It is called the CEP, and used well it turns every transfer from your company into evidence sealed by the monetary authority.
Your bank receipt is not the CEP (and the difference matters)
The receipt your banking app gives you is a document from your bank: useful, but one-sided. The CEP (electronic payment receipt) is generated by Banxico's SPEI system and certifies that the transaction settled — that the money left your account and was credited to the destination CLABE (interbank account number), with date, time, amount and a digital seal from the central payment infrastructure. In a dispute, the difference between "here's my screenshot" and "here's the Bank of Mexico's settlement certificate, with the tracking key anyone can verify" is the difference between claiming and proving.
Where the CEP wins disputes
- Rentals: the landlord who "didn't receive" the rent in order to build a termination case — the file of monthly CEPs closes the discussion before it starts.
- Suppliers and advances: the advance paid that the supplier denies while disputing a breach. Settled payment + contract = your complete position.
- Labor: final pay and wages the worker claims not to have received — remember that in labor court the burden of proving payment falls on the employer; the CEP is exactly that proof.
- Tax: the substance (materiality) of your transactions (art. 69-B) is built with contract + deliverables + bank flow; the CEP documents that third pillar with an official source, and ties the payment to the CFDI and its corresponding payment supplement (complemento).
Does your company file CEPs — or trust that the bank 'has it somewhere'?
We implement the institutional payment file with clients: the CEP downloaded and filed for each relevant transfer, tied to its CFDI, contract and payment supplement. It is a minutes-long routine that manufactures perpetual evidence — and the first line of defense in any commercial, labor or tax-materiality dispute.
The habit worth its weight in gold: download and file
At banxico.org.mx/cep (direct link in our Resource Center) enter the date, the tracking key (it's on your bank receipt), the banks, the destination CLABE and the amount — download the PDF and the XML. Do it the same day you pay: the portal query has a limited time window, and the CEP filed today is the one you won't be able to easily obtain a year from now, exactly when the dispute shows up. For recurring payments (rent, professional fees, payroll for trusted staff), turn it into an administrative routine: a folder per counterparty, CEP + CFDI + payment supplement together. Be honest about the limits: same-bank transfers do not generate a CEP (they don't go through SPEI) — for important payments to accounts at the same bank, consider using SPEI to a different bank or document them with the certified account statement; and the CEP proves the payment, not the purpose — the contract and the transfer reference still do their part.
Frequently asked questions
Does the CEP work as evidence in court?
It is a document generated by the central bank's payment system with a digital seal — its evidentiary weight in practice is among the highest available to prove a payment, and its public verifiability (anyone can re-query it with the tracking key) makes it very hard to contest. It is offered together with the account statement and the contractual context of the payment.
I paid months ago and can no longer find the CEP on the portal — did I lose the evidence?
No: your bank is required to be able to document the transaction, and you can request a transfer certificate from the bank; the account statement also reflects the payment. But the process is slower and more bureaucratic than the click it cost on payment day — hence the immediate-filing habit.
How do I tie the CEP to my tax obligations?
Every relevant payment to suppliers must have its CFDI and, in installments or deferred payment, the supplier's payment-receipt supplement. CEP + CFDI + supplement is the trio that documents cash flow, invoice and tax timing — the basis of both your deduction and your materiality defense.
